East London - Environmental Statement |
Flow Analysis Ltd were commissioned to perform part of an Environmental Impact Assessment for a mixed mode development in London. Specifically, the task was to conduct a local wind assessment with reference to pedestrian comfort. A CFD model of the site and the surrounding existing buildings was set up. The model included several important details such as carparks underneath rooftop terraces which act as air flow paths. Several sets of local wind data for the site were statistically analysed to determine the appropriate percentile wind speeds for each wind direction. |
The wind patterns showed some complex air patterns and re-circulations associated with the varying building heights in the development. The results were analysed in terms of pedestrian comfort for the expected activity levels (sitting, standing, walking) covering the whole site. The first results indicated some potential problems associated with the rooftop terraces. The subsequent re-design, as a result of Flow Analysis' findings, involved adding partition screening and planting to divide the terraces into sectioned seating areas. These acted as efficient wind-breaks which very effectively alleviated the potentially uncomfortable conditions. The services of Flow Analysis proved to be cost-effective and efficient in the process of obtaining planning approval for the scheme. |
